Senate President Godswill Akpabio has returned to Nigeria from London, brushing aside rumours about his health and insisting he is “fit as a fiddle.”

Speculation had circulated on social media that the Senate President was critically ill and receiving treatment in a London hospital. But speaking with journalists at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, in the early hours of Monday, Akpabio described the reports as baseless. “There’s nothing like that,” he said. “I only stopped over in London for a short vacation.”

Akpabio had earlier attended the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva from 29 to 31 July before travelling to London for what he called a well-earned rest after a demanding legislative year.

Arriving at 4 a.m., he was received at the Presidential Wing by senators, aides, and supporters from various walks of life.

Looking ahead to the Senate’s resumption, Akpabio promised Nigerians “robust legislative engagements” and highlighted the importance of Nigeria’s strong presence at the International Parliamentary Union in Geneva. He assured citizens of deeper democratic dividends and closer cooperation with the executive and judiciary in the months ahead.
